A worked example, not a customer claim. The scenario, workflow and deliverables below are illustrative. No completed engagement or measured outcome is represented.
01 / Speech data review
The situation: a score without a diagnosis.
Consider a team preparing to evaluate speech recognition for customer-support calls. The source mix includes clean speech, background noise, interruptions and specialist product names. A single aggregate score would not reveal which of those conditions needs attention.
This is an illustrative study, not a customer engagement or a report of measured results. Its purpose is to show the decisions, handoffs and evidence that could make a speech-data project more useful.
02 / Speech data review
Specify the reference before transcribing.
The team defines a transcription convention: whether to retain fillers, how to mark unclear speech, when to segment utterances and how to represent overlapping speakers. It supplies an authorized glossary and sets rules for speaker labels without asking reviewers to infer identities.
A coverage manifest distinguishes recording conditions and domains. The brief excludes unusable files using explicit rejection reasons. It also distinguishes the reference set from any future training set so that evaluation material is not accidentally reused to improve the model being tested.
- Source inventory
- Stable file IDs, duration, recording condition and known language context.
- Review instructions
- Agreed conventions for words, uncertainty, overlap and segment boundaries.
- Handoff contract
- A sample schema with timestamps, text, speaker labels and review status.
03 / Speech data review
Review the difficult parts with the source in view.
A first pass creates candidate transcripts. Reviewers compare the text with the recordings and apply the agreed conventions. Unclear names and terminology are flagged for a domain-aware reviewer rather than silently replaced with plausible words.
A QA pass checks both content and structure. Timestamp ordering, missing fields and duplicate IDs can be validated automatically; unresolved wording needs source-based judgment. Material disagreements go to adjudication, with the final decision and rationale recorded.
| Issue | Proposed handling |
|---|---|
| Unclear phrase | Mark uncertainty using the agreed convention; escalate when consequential. |
| Specialist term | Consult the authorized glossary and source; record unresolved alternatives. |
| Overlapping speech | Apply the documented segmentation and overlap rules. |
| Malformed timestamps | Reject or correct through schema validation before delivery. |
04 / Speech data review
Deliver evidence, not just transcript files.
The proposed handoff includes reference transcripts, a source manifest, a list of excluded items and review notes for unresolved cases. A validation report explains which structural checks were performed and which conventions were applied.
The receiving team can then evaluate error patterns by condition, using a consistent scoring method and stating its limitations. This study does not promise an accuracy gain. Success would be a reference set the team can inspect, reproduce and use to decide what to investigate next.
